Tom Fernandez was hired by Roen Salvage in 1968. He had diesel mechanic training and was hired on as a deckhand that could also repair machinery. Tom’s skills, work ethic, and love of machinery were soon noticed, and he was provided the opportunity to become a crane operator.

As a crane operator, Tom evolved to such a level that his peers recognized him as one of the best floating operators on the Great Lakes. His mechanical instinct, along with his passion for operating the machine, lead to tender care for each and every component of the crane’s makeup.

During his career Tom was a certified welder, held a 100 ton tug captain license, operated loaders, dozers, backhoes, and supervised numerous multi-million dollar projects. In Tom’s own words, “When it comes to opportunity at Roen Salvage, the sky is the limit.”

Don Sarter was hired by Roen Steamship Company in 1971 as a deckhand with no marine experience. During his time there, he developed an appreciation and skillset for working on and adjacent to water. When he came to Roen Salvage Company in 1973, he immediately demonstrated excellent work ethic and a strong intuition for heavy machinery.

Over the years, he steadily accumulated the skills necessary to weld, operate a crane, drive piles, and captain a tug boat. It was clear he had a knack for planning ahead and maintaining constant lines of communication. Thus, in 1991 he was promoted to superintendent, and then became the company’s head superintendent. He was a certified welder, NCCCO certified crane operator, master of towing vessels, and radar observer (unlimited).

He worked on more than 100 marine construction projects involving pile driving, stone breakwaters, dredging, offshore light structures, submarine pipelines, and sheet pile corrosion protection.

As a self-driven individual, Jim tasked himself with understanding our Manitowoc cranes down to every bolt. As a result, his mechanical expertise is unparalleled.

Undeterred by obstacles encountered on the job, Jim wasalways presenting innovative solutions to difficult problems. The mechanical and technological knowledge he provided was crucial to steering Roen Salvage in the right direction to remain an industry leader.

He was promoted to supervisor in 1999 and has worked on numerous marine construction and dredging projects. He was an NCCCO certified crane operator and a certified welder.
